The city of Compiègne and its surrounding forest are rich in history and natural heritage in France. One of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Palace of Compiègne, was a royal residence under Louis XV and Louis XVI, and later an imperial residence under Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III. Compiègne is most famous for being the location of the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, in the clearing of Rethondes, deep within the forest of Compiègne. This agreement marked the end of fighting in World War I. The clearing has since become a memorial site. The Compiègne Forest is one of the largest forests in France, covering 14,357 hectares. It holds great ecological and historical significance.
